Global warming and energy policy
Of all the challenges we face, this may be the most serious. Sooner or later, our armed forces will leave Iraq. We will make adjustments to the Social Security program, we just haven't figured out who gets adjusted. Our health care system will stumble along, with the hospital emergency room serving as the safety valve.
But global warming and our dwindling supplies of gas and oil must be dealt with now. Most experts say that if we don't take real action in the next 10 years, we may face extreme crisis.
1. I support an increase in fuel standards for all vehicles to an average of 40 miles per gallon by the year 2020.
2. I will work to adopt a national energy efficiency building code, moving to zero energy type buildings by 2020. The passivhaus movement in Germany proves we can do this.
3. I support a huge increase in development of concentrating solar power generation. Our two New Mexico national labs, Sandia and Los Alamos, can help make this clean technology successful and affordable.
